Latvia Launches USD43.6M Plan to Encourage Green Vehicle Adoption
The initiative, introduced by the Ministry of Climate and Energy, is designed to provide financial support for those buying electric cars, plug-in hybrids, and hydrogen-powered vehicles. The level of subsidy will differ depending on the type of vehicle selected, as well as eligibility criteria such as whether applicants hold a Latvian Honorary Family Certificate, which is issued to households with more than three children.
Officials stated that the program will remain active until the allocated budget is fully used, but no later than December 31, 2029.
Climate and Energy Minister Kaspars Melnis said the policy is intended to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels like petrol and diesel. He emphasized that the transition would also encourage greater use of domestically produced renewable electricity, supporting Latvia’s broader energy and environmental goals.
